Carsten Brühl studied biology at Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg and Duke University in North Carolina, USA, specialising in tropical biology and animal ecology. Following the completion of his dissertation on the impact of forest management on ant biodiversity in tropical rainforests of Borneo, he worked in ecotoxicology for the agrochemical industry in Switzerland and England. He heads the research team on Community Ecology and Ecotoxicology at the iES Institute for Environmental Sciences in Landau since 2006.
Pesticides Everywhere – And No One Knows How Many
From May to September, tractors surrounded by clouds of spray are a familiar sight in vineyards and fields. The pesticides they apply are intended to protect plants from pests and diseases. However, since these chemicals do not easily break down, they accumulate in the soil as complex mixtures. Their effects are still poorly understood.
