Prof. Dr. Klaus Schwenk
"I am fascinated by the combination of long-term processes (evolution) and dynamic interactions in the here and now (ecology).“
Klaus Schwenk and his research group focuse on the development and application of molecular methods to address ecological and evolutionary biological questions. We investigate the biodiversity of invertebrates in aquatic systems (surface and groundwater), focusing on water-land interactions and changes in genetic variation and species diversity over space and time.
Life underground
Groundwater is our most important source of drinking water and crucial to the water cycle. At the same time, it is an ecosystem with a diverse community of organisms. The organisms living there contribute to drinking water quality through material and energy cycles.
