Lecture halls open to children with a thirst for knowledge

New programme, new ideas: The RPTU Children's University will launch in 2025 with a series of lectures in several locations

How can metals be made to amaze us? How can fish breathe under water? And what does a real research laboratory look like? Answers to these and many other questions can be found at the RPTU's new Children's University.

For the first time, the two university campuses in Landau and Kaiserslautern are presenting a joint Children's University programme with lectures and hands-on activities for children aged 8 to 12. The events are free of charge, clearly structured and open to all children who want to experience science at first hand.

Research up close - explained in a child-friendly way

The programme kicks off on 14 May in Landau: Dr Nico Graw from the Department of Chemistry Education will show how different metals can be - and why they play such an important role in our everyday lives - in his talk "Not all metals are the same". The first event in Kaiserslautern will take place on 4 June. Professor Erik von Harbou from the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering will take the young audience on an exciting journey into the world of gases and liquids. "Bubbles and bubbles - how do fish breathe in water?" is the title of his talk.

A total of nine lectures are planned for 2025, supplemented by workshops and hands-on courses. The close cooperation between the two sites will ensure a particularly broad range of topics and allow children to explore different areas according to their interests.
The new programme is organised by the Centre for Education and Research in Out-of-School Places (ZentrAL). The aim is to give children early access to the world of science in a playful, age-appropriate and inspiring way.

All information about the current programme, registration and the newsletter can be found on the newly designed Children's University website: rptu.de/kinderuni
